Creativity is at the heart of everything that RAYMOND WEIL does. Likewise, it is a quality the company recognises in others. A few months ago, the company wanted to procure a customised motorbike for promotional purposes. As a result, it turned to the specialist firm, Meister Engineering, visiting its showroom in the centre of Geneva. The company, comprising artisans and engineers, reimagines standard motorbikes, imbuing them with its own distinctive blend of creativity, style and mechanical virtue. Ultimately, the two-wheeled work of art inspired the Genevan watch brand to create a bronze timepiece equipped with a chronograph, the freelancer 7780.

On the brand’s customised motorbike, the name RAYMOND WEIL adorns the fuel tank and is depicted in rose gold foil. This provided the inspiration for the texture of the 43.5mm bronze case and the two counters gracing the dial. Likewise, the motorbike’s gradient effect paint influenced the watch’s black smoked dial. This latter detail confers an interesting display with light tones at the centre of the dial that assumes a darker shade near the edge. The tachymeter and pulsometer scales engraved on the motorcycle tank cap are replicated on the watch’s satin-finished ceramic bezel insert and flange, respectively. Even the freelancer’s rich brown calf leather strap has been inspired by the motorbike’s leather-clad seat.

The specification of the bespoke motorbike has provided a wealth of ideas for the brand’s new vintage-inspired watch. The symmetrical bi-compax layout features a 30-minute chronograph counter and a small seconds display. The golden hour and minute hands are generously proportioned and, in conjunction with the applied indexes, prove highly legible. The hour track is snailed, while the hands and indexes feature luminescent treatment, augmenting readability in restricted light. The colour of the central chronograph seconds hand, the hand on the 30-minute register and the numerals on the pulsometer scale are presented in orange shades. A date display is positioned at 6 o’clock, once again contributing to the overall symmetry of the dial. The date disc is presented in black, matching the colour of the dial, a detail much appreciated by purists. This model encompasses a number of exquisite refinements. The tachymeter scale, presented on the bezel, provides the means to determine the speed of a motorbike, or vehicle of your choice, over a known distance. Residing on a bronze-toned flange, a pulsometer scale allows the wearer to determine the heart rate of an individual. A notable characteristic of this dial is that it wonderfully plays with shades, depths and textures, contributing to the watch’s sophisticated appearance.

With time, the bronze will mature and form a patina, heightening the overall sense of elegance. To the rear of the watch, the case back is presented in stainless steel. The movement, the Calibre RW5030, is visible via the exhibition caseback. Once again, the attention to detail is clear to see. For example, the watch is fitted with a W-shaped skeleton oscillating weight, a reference to the founder’s surname. A further attribute of this automatic movement is that, assuming the mainspring is fully wound, the watch will run autonomously for 56 hours. As stated earlier, the watch comes on a brown calf leather strap. It is enlivened with contrasting stitching and paired with a bronze folding clasp equipped with a double push-security system.

The RAYMOND WEIL freelancer chronograph bi-compax is available in two variants: one in a bronze case, limited to just 300 pieces and with red and orange accents, and the other in a bronze and titanium case, with blue accents. This new chronograph is perfectly suited to free thinkers and creative individuals. Take it on the road and make it your own.

At the heart of the new freelancer Chronograph 7741 sits the new Calibre RW5030. Visible through the exhibition caseback, this automatic movement has a power reserve of 56 hours.

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching models in the new collection is the reference 7741-SC7-52021, presented in a bewitching shade of green. On this model, the 30-minute and 12-hour chronograph registers are equipped with highly legible white hands, while all three counters are framed with silver-toned circlets. The hour track is snailed, adding a delightful texture to the display and the dial is slightly smoked, contributing to the model’s handsome appearance.

Art Deco, a movement in decorative arts, furniture and architecture, was very popular in Europe and the US during the 1920s and 30s. Linear and geometric designs, streamlining, long lines with crisp edges, symmetry, simplified figures and shapes are all associated with the Art Deco movement. Although this movement is approximately 100 years old, its allure has never diminished.

In 2020, RAYMOND WEIL looked to the past and created a new range of vintage-inspired watches within the toccata collection. The design of each model references the Art Deco movement with pure, crisp lines and beautifully defined details. In the spirit of continuous improvement, these new models are an evolution of what has gone before, however, they do not diminish the appeal of their forebears. Housed in elegantly refined rectangular cases, these new creations exude a charming simplicity. Displaying merely the hours, minutes and date, there is a welcome purity to each dial option. The story began in 1976, when RAYMOND WEIL founded his eponymous company. Today, the firm distributes products around the globe. From the outset, the Swiss marque, based in Geneva, had a special affinity with the world of music. Indeed, it has since forged close partnerships with legendary artists, music brands, concert venues and prestigious award ceremonies. The fields of horology and music share much in common, especially when it comes to the importance of precise timing. Over the years, RAYMOND WEIL has created products bearing the iconic names of Gibson and Marshall. Moreover, it has produced watches linked to several famous artists, including AC/DC, David Bowie, Buddy Holly and Bob Marley. However, in 2016, the Maison announced a remarkable coup, namely, forming a partnership with Apple Corps, the venture set up by the world’s most famous rock band, The Beatles.

The inaugural Beatles-themed watch, the maestro 2237-ST-BEAT1, was released in 2016. It sported a silver dial marked with various album titles positioned around the hour track. The official Beatles logo sat in the lower portion of the dial and a special ‘Help’ index, depicting the Fab Four, assumed residence at the 4 o’clock position. Limited to 3000 pieces, the watch enjoyed widespread appeal.

One year later (2017), RAYMOND WEIL made a repeat performance, playing to a growing audience, releasing the maestro The Beatles “Abbey Road” Limited Edition. Once again, the model was limited to 3000 pieces. It was housed in a 39.5mm stainless steel case and featured a black dial that emulated the appearance of a vinyl disc. The Beatles logo was positioned beneath the fulcrum of the dial and the iconic Abbey Road silhouette sat at 4 o’clock.

In 2019, the Swiss brand launched the maestro The Beatles “Sgt Pepper’s” Limited Edition. Measuring 40mm in diameter, the case was dressed in yellow gold PVD. For the first time, RAYMOND WEIL chose to equip the watch with a vegan leather strap. A replica of the drum motif, pictured on the album cover of ‘Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’, took pride of place at the heart of the dial. In addition, the Beatles logo sat at 6 o’clock. This year, RAYMOND WEIL released the “Let it Be” maestro. With its 40mm stainless steel case, the watch exhibited wonderful proportions and, once again, featured a vegan strap. In this instance, the Genevan Maison employed its expertise for making openworked watches, revealing the regulating organ, spring barrel and a plethora of other parts usually hidden from view. Consistent with other Beatles-themed models, the rock band’s logo was in evidence, albeit this time it was positioned at 9 o’clock.

This latter watch was the swansong for RAYMOND WEIL’s collaboration with Apple Corps. However, one lucky collector now has the opportunity to purchase a unique, four-part set containing each of the aforementioned Beatles branded models. At the time of launch, each of the four Beatles models was limited to just 3000 pieces. RAYMOND WEIL retained the first example of each model, all bearing the same serial number ‘0001’. These now feature within the four-part set, conferring an unprecedented degree of exclusivity.

This unique Beatles set is presented in a sumptuous wooden case and is available for 20,000 CHF. RAYMOND WEIL will donate 100% of the sale proceeds to Nordoff Robins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity, providing a fitting finale to a wonderful collaboration.

RAYMOND WEIL has just launched our new maestro automatic timepieces which are a part of the RAYMOND WEIL core collection. They combine a timeless and elegant design with Swiss craftsmanship and watchmaking tradition.

The maestro, meaning “master”, demonstrates the mastery of RAYMOND WEIL Swiss horology and celebrates the world of Music. How does it translate to the Brand and you personally?

Music is a big part of the Brand and a huge inspiration that translates over to our timepieces. We have our Music Icons series that celebrate unique artists and bands such as Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, David Bowie and more, in addition to our core collections. I myself am a music lover, I play the piano and specialize in the cello.

What timepiece are you currently wearing?
Today, I have chosen our new freelancer skeleton watch, 2785-BKR-20000. It features RAYMOND WEIL’s RW1212 calibre in-house movement, symbolising the path we have travelled to date and the free-spirited approach we bring to watchmaking.

RAYMOND WEIL is one of the last family-owned watchmaking companies. What sets it apart?

The strap is secured by a stainless-steel folding clasp with a double push-button safety system. This model maintains the collection’s signature attributes: finely tapered horns that curve comfortably to the wrist and the external chronograph pushers. The screwed-down steel case back with sapphire crystal creates an air tight seal providing a water resistance up to 100 meters.
